Back or shoulder pain. Difficulties in walking or running. Public discomfort or uneasiness facing the attention of others. Those are all problems that can affect women with voluminous breasts, often opting for a breast reduction. In cases of mammary hypertrophy, where general health is compromised, this procedure becomes an essential solution.
Breast reduction surgery consists in removing the excess of skin and mammary gland, causing the hypertrophy. Two small incisions are usually made: a first one, vertically under the aureola and a second one under the breast, following its natural curve. Once the excess tissues removed, the remaining mammary gland is reshaped to gain a round and symmetrical form. The aureola and the nipple are then repositionned, to get a more natural and esthetic look. A breast reduction surgery can last up to three hours, performed under general anesthesia.
Patients will stay at the clinic for a period of 1 to 3 days after a breast reduction surgery for daily post-surgery check ups. After the procedure, moderate pain is to be expected but can be controlled easily. Patients most of the time can go back to work a few days after the procedure depending on their area of work. We recommend that patients wait at least 6 weeks to practice intense physical activity again. During the months following the procedure, continuous improvements will be observed. For a determined period of time, the continual wearing of the compression garment will also be recommended.
