What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure performed to give a woman’s breasts their firm, symmetrical and lively look back. For certain women, pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss, or simply natural loss of skin elasticity can have an important impact on the appearance of their breasts. Breast lifts intervene to counter those factors, reducing ptosis (sagging of the breast) and elevating the nipples and aureolas to their former and natural positions. Even if the procedure doesn’t consist in enlarging the breasts, it’s often done conjointly with a breast implant surgery.

How does the procedure go?

A breast lift surgery can last up to 3 hours, and is performed under general anesthesia. More specifically, three small incisions are made. A first circular incision around the aureola, a second vertical incision under the aureola, and a last incision under the breast, following its natural curve. The surgeon then removes the excess skin, and streches the remaining skin, to put the aureola and nipple in the desired position.

Recovery

Patients will stay at the clinic for a period of 1 to 3 days after breast lift procedure, for daily post-surgery check ups. After the procedure, moderate pain is to be expected but can be controlled, with possible prescribed medication. Patients most of the time can go back to work a few days after the porcedure depending on their area of work. We recommend that patients wait at least 6 weeks to practice intense physical activity again. During the months following the procedure, continuous improvements of the appearance of the breasts will be observed.
